once upon a long ago
before i wore our band
when our separation seemed eternity

i was burnt out from sleeplessness
bruised and buried in the mire
flamed, fried and flayed

haunted by the ticking clock
lying exhausted on the floor

was all this hurt worth it?

i staggered to my feet
