A Lady's Song

by Alicia   Apr 10, 2012

I thought I saw a lady,
she was sitting quite alone,
in a dream of days gone by,
a world all of her own.

I approached with interest,
to observe her sad expression.
Her eyes were far away,
so I began to question.

"What is on your mind?" I said,
and made my voice sound gentle.
She smiled and was silent,
Seeming sentimental.

I waited for an answer,
That I didn't think would come.
But then that silent girl,
Began to sing a song.

'Long ago there was a man,
of kindness now unseen.
He showed me how to live,
and crowned me as his queen.

Our people held a festival,
To celebrate our reign.
We were blessed by God himself,
Rich in field and grain.

Though he dealt with other kings,
Some were marked by greed.
The devil placed his eyes on us,
A face of twisted need.

The soldiers came so fast,
without a sign or warning.
He couldn't say goodbye,
Before he left that morning.

To guard his pride and joy,
A simple little town,
He risked his very life,
So the soldiers would back down.

The last time that I saw him,
He was torn and bleeding.
On my knees in my despair,
I shook from all the weeping.

He left me a sweet note,
Delivered after death.
It said that it was here,
He valued every breath.

I came to visit in his honor,
This place that last he saw.
I think that in that moment,
He laughed in gentle awe.

For this spot grows a flower,
He placed in my left hand,
That day he said he loved me,
And took me to his land.

I've sung my story's end,
There is no more to tell.
I wait here evermore,
Refusing his farewell.'

Now we both were quiet,
from this tale of sad defeat.
Inspired by a man,
I could never meet.

Soon I journeyed home,
And sat down fast to write.
Delivered every word,
she shared that blessed night.
