The Sky's Still Pink, Momma

by Poet on the Piano   May 15, 2012

I am not dreaming of your footsteps Momma,
I can feel them as you walk, making memories
of who you so desire to be.

The shadows are trying to surround you
please don't listen to them;
they won't be your constant friends,
though they may seem to follow,
they only follow where their greed takes them.

But here you stand, full of love-
and I know I was made to breathe inside of you
this love has turned the world into
the color that flushes the skyline now.

Everyone says you can't turn around
at the end of an occupied day,
but it's still pink outside
and you were always called to be
no one else but my Momma.

And I don't want you to let me go-
the day doesn't have to end like this
there isn't always darkness here
please just listen to my heartbeat....

it isn't telling you to say goodnight.

I'm so deeply touched by this piece-
What a unique and precious title- very touching.

The love of a daughter to her mother is elegantly expressed within. A heart touching lay out of unconditional love...

"this love has turned the world into
the color that flushes the skyline now." <----------- love these lines.

Mercy..... the ending is so darn powerful... No matter what the connection and bond is always there...

From start to finish the tears fell while I read this poem- Well done Poet on the Piano

To be honest, I read this like quite a few times (before it won, and after) .. At first, the first part to me was so magical, yet the second, I felt it was like forced and not enjoyable... and that was because I didn't know what this was truly about. (yeah, I didn't read between the lines :P)

And now, after I truly knew what all of this was about, I salute you dearly.. so dearly.. a standing O, also, for you know how damn much I love the poets who talk about social problems in a marvelous poetic way.

I am comparing now the title: the sky's still pink.. to the theme: abortion... and I'm saying WOW,, this is brilliant.

Way to go MaryAnne!!! please write about social stuff more often because I'm always thirsty for them.... love and broken relationships don't do me any good these days :P

    Congrats

  • There are several different interpretations here and I must admit, abortion wasnt one that I was thinking of when I first read it. Though reading it again it certainly does fit the bill. Either way its a heartbreaking piece that you have so beautifully written. The first verse just captivated me and I was undoubtedly mesmerised until the end. I can see clearly why this won. Congratulations, it is well deserved. (:
