Illness

by Thomas   May 31, 2012

Some people
are really sick
But the sad part is,
they don't even know it

Infected they were
by people or life
Little and big things
crawling skin deep

Leaving permanent marks
on their inside
Like criminal loan sharks,
month after month

They're scarred
So scarred
that they are starting to show
on the outside

It's like
they're being turned
inside out
without screaming out loud

Their screams
are muffled
Their pain
remains unheard

They are infected
with happiness amnesia
A very severe disorder
that goes to your very core

Forgetting
what made you happy,
limiting
your life's view

that's why
they take rash decision
and sometimes
take their own life

Yup, I agree, this one is a well written piece that leaves the reader thinking. I've been wondering why many even contemplate the idea about suicide but the sad truth is that they might think is the easiest solution, unfortunately, it is not. Neither do I think is the right one. I hope they can open their eyes and see that within all the sadness that they have stored within them, a jar of happiness is waiting to be open.

Being misunderstood, ignored, abandoned... are all 'illnesses', and as you've written, some people don't even know they are 'sick'.
I like the 'happiness amnesia', it stands out and it is rather unique. Some people forget happiness, but little do they know, it's still all around them. We must learn to appreciate even the smallest things to be happy.
I also like how straightforward this is. Instead of metaphors and such, you made it clear for the reader what kind of 'illness' you are talking about. The ending was really sad because it is true.
This is a delicate subject to write about; more and more people contemplate suicide these days and it is saddening. It just shows how the world is falling apart and people no longer want to keep falling with it.

Very good and very true poem Thomas. I agree with what Dagmar said-some people cry and scream so loud but their pain remains yet to be heard. My favorite part is the fifth stanza because I can relate to it. Very good poem.

This poem of yours is close to home
Being misunderstand by the whole world
We cry scream and yell, often going to
drastic measures just to be heard
At the end some see no other way out
    than ending their lives
