Catalan Promises

by Poet on the Piano   Jul 13, 2012

I summoned you as if you were
a call away from Barcelona,
pressed between Catalan skies
that obligate themselves
in their Romance
of copper and flame
silhouettes.

I dream that souvenirs
are as easy as stepping through
cathedral traffic, built up with
characteristics
I will come to know, curl
between my sides.

But I am not yours,
I'm not a hundred and twenty
years ago, when architecture
swept you away
and distinguished your light.

Why do others cite
that you are a modernity?

My hazel eyes are no
different than any other human,
but I see you as ageless-
not desiring to be attracted
by history makers
who braid you in their
armor.

How can I believe
I could ever guard you
from those who follow,
and in a second's betrayal,

take you home to your own
rough country,

after dark is born.

For I am not of your skies,
nor made from the sands
your memories call
platjas. I am not like the
beach, or the bridges and
rivers that I walk over
with the utmost blues
in mind.

I am not of your language,
and I don't see if I can
ever be,

made for you to vow.

* have wanted to write incorporating Barcelona for a long time....it's my dream to travel there someday, and pictures of the city and cathedrals are incredibly overwhelming.

This is absolutely gorgeous. I've only been really reading your work properly lately, and you write with such flair and craft, it's astounding.

Places rich in culture and vibrance like the beautiful Catalan city are such brilliant sources of inspiration. You've drew the blood from the walls of Barcelona here, you've given it a voice, you've given characters a love and a language to speak.

This piece reminds me of me so much. I relate to it whole-heartedly. Loved the narration, and the first stanza was mouth-watering, but I won't gush anymore ;)

Visit Barcelona. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks so much for reading Danny! I appreciate your thoughts and words. That's incredible you spent a year there, what inspiration that would be. I hope to too someday if I get the chance to travel there :)
