Young Tragedies

by Hannah Lizette   Jul 26, 2012

Three beauty queens,
traveling with the world in the palm of their hands,
plane crashed upon autumn tree tops,
praising God until their very last breath.

Two teenage lovers,
drugs quickly turned friends into foes,
two shots to the head,
burnt remains are all that's left.

One college student,
soaking up the summer sun,
diving off a rock, just like many times before,
splashing into the lake, only to never resurface alive.

*My little community I live in has faced several young tragedies in the past year. The young girls happened last year in a plane crash; the teenager lovers happened just a week ago; and today the college student tragedy happened. So please pray for all their family/friends and my community...it is a lot to deal with in such a small amount of time. <3

  • A sad remembrance of these tragedies and the people who have lost their lives. I know the feeling...

It's devastating when anyone dies but I think especially when they are young, because they could/should have had such a future ahead of them, but now it will be no more.

This is a great dedication, Hannah. I've been coming back to this piece for a while but don't really know how to comment..

I like the title. It doesn't give away too much but it kind of warns the reader that this would be really sad.
I also liked how you wrote it with the decreasing number of deaths as it gives this an eerie atmosphere; as though this was planned. I don't know if it was coincidental or you really did it that way but I thought it was creepy - fits however.
My only suggestion would be to change 'one college student..' to 'a college..' it's quite awkward using one. But that's just my opinion. Another awesome write Hannah. Keep it up :)

This poem is completely sad and does show a lot of tragedies that have happened.

The way you set out the poem I thought was clever, the three first then the two and then the one. It is very poetic but the context is heartbreaking.

I love this piece and I feel such sympathy for their family in my heart.

    Awesome dedication and write

Oh my. That is a real tragedy.
I just like how the three stanzas that are distant in content connected together, by decreasing number of victims: 3, 2, 1.

    Prayers to their families.

Hannah, this piece is flawless. I like how you briefly told a big, sorrowful incident and just gave me shivers.

    Beautiful <3
