War of life

by Lily Ashford   Sep 2, 2012

A young man died today
He was barely grown
He was doing something great
Far, far from home

His mother was told
Of what he had done
How he saved a life
The bravery of her son

She sat and cried
Her heart ripped in two
She sat in the dark
Not knowing what to do

Then she wiped her eyes
And thought of his life
How he was born
How he'd met his wife

She then closed her eyes
And let out a prayer
That where ever he was
Her husband was there

For all her son wanted
Was to be like his Dad
To fight for his country
Ever since he was a lad

And his mother was outraged
By the comments someone said
That it was a wasted life
Because he was dead

Her anger was raging
She didn't know what to say
How could his life be wasted
He lived for everyday

He made love with his wife
He sang out of tune
He loved every holiday
And loved to look at the moon

And when he joined the Army
He was more than proud
His family cheered him on
Clapped and screamed aloud

They knew what it meant
That he may go to war
But freedom of his country
It meant so much more

So off to battle he went
In dessert of sand
And when his men went down
He offered his hand

And at his funeral they stood
All in a line
A mark of respect
For a man so fine

At the end of the line
Sat a man in a chair
His arm in a sling
His leg not there

But when the music played
And his mother was mute
He stood on his own
And raised his hand in salute

And twenty years later
He sits in his home
In comes his daughter
A family of her own

He closes his eyes
He speaks to the air
He speaks to a friend
Who is no longer there

Thank you my friend
For saving my life
For giving your own
In the war of life
