I think the conceit, or extended metaphor, of this poem as a whole intrigues me. Darkness, traditionally used in a negative way in poetry and prose, is used as a calming, comforting, influence and to me the speaker aims to provide an opportunity for her lover to shine. It's submissive, but in a very tender, sweet way. |
