If I Could

by Poet on the Piano   Oct 7, 2012

If I could,
I'd show you the contents of love.
All I've seen is that it's much deeper
than cracked lines of coffee mugs,
your morning bedsheets, broken toys,
& blended affections....
it's more like flying kites a thousand
times over,
making movies on rainy days &
watching friendship run into
hills that hold pomegranate trees
carved with

"you & I: sultans of Kabul".

If I could,
I'd write you a letter every day,
to my brave, dear friend
just to say I really did love you.
It's like we were brothers,
weren't we?
I was servant and a Hazara yet
that was my place- I only wanted
everything for you in a country
where our souls were nursed
from the same breast;

now it feels like Afghanistan is a
wasteland. But not when you
can carry on long ago memories
vacant of cowardice and shame
and lost smiles.

If I could,
I'd hope you understand that
my loyalty is much more than
the ant you took me out under magnifying
glasses...
it's blue kites with red tails,
or red kites with blue tails,
anything you desire most....

we have a kinship, a love
needing no formal allegiance.

But you already know all this,
don't you?

Inspired by the book "The Kite Runner". I just focused on the relationship of Hassan and Amir, growing up together in Afghanistan and then the regret later on Amir has when he realizes all that Hassan sacrificed, and how he still lives on.

Such a great write. A great style, breath-taking metaphors and most important of all; your lines breaks. I love them.

    You've got a typo there: 'I I could' should've been 'if I could'

And yup, I am having a really nice weekend. ;) Hope you're too!
    Missed ya.
