a solitary moment, forgetting the fretful could-
have-beens, concerning myself with promising
could-bes.

For separating the distress from the bliss.
Intermingling thoughts of lost hope, vanishing
stealthily into welcoming thin air with each
grateful breath I exhale.

Thank you for ripping out the beckoning roots,
daring to trip up my already tangled feet-
For restraining me from easily flinging my stubborn
mind back into the ever deeper monotonous black.

Thank you for using your firm hands to keep my feet
straight on the ground-
For allowing me to cease my cowardly escape routes.
For not forgetting I exist while walking amidst all those
whose words wish to bruise me...
