Homeless Tree

by Chelsey   Nov 5, 2012

Your maple leaves shed like dry skin in the winter.
Dusting our air with your exoskeleton, baptizing
your life in an attempt to rid the past.

I hugged your trunk with anticipation
that I'd make you feel shameless
for starting over each season.

My ear became the ultra sound of an
expecting mother and I cried when
I could not find your heart beat.

Nature whispered in my ear that,
"there is no womb, no home for this tree".

Surely, this sodden ground is no
foundation for your shelter to be built
and its clear your exhausted after years
of housing others, while no one houses you.

Earthly being, tonight I will sleep by you
because I too remain homeless and
I must snuggle against you in thanks
because your lack of pulse has reminded
me of what I feel for him...

Nothing.

I cant say enough about this powerful metaphoric nature poem... How the author designs, the heartfelt sadness of a homeless and dying tree, and also intertwines the emptiness of her feelings into both is very touching... all around a beautiful and breathtaking poem!!!

Another good poem, I like how you really felt empathy with this tree and related yourself to and with it. But it was your ending that I loved best. When the fact that you could not feel anything in the tree, it reminded you that you could no longer feel anything for him. This was just awesome.

Aww this is heartbreaking....I loved all the connections you put in with the tree, how it seemed to take on personifications, and then at the end how you portray feeling nothing to this man from your past perhaps? Amazing intrigue, you made this tree come to life and be such a peaceful companion. Beautiful read! :]
