The New Millennium

by Michael D Nalley   Dec 4, 2012

Christopher Columbus began a quest
to find a trade route sailing west.
At the dawning of many millennia
there have been journeys to India.
A heart filled with dreams and love
is often guided by stars above.
West winds bound from the east
had somehow been used the least
If Marco Polo was reincarnated
he would see his enterprise recreated
For a new creation to be enjoyed
another world must be destroyed
Though many years have come and gone
each new calendar travels on

This is very unique and witty. I adore the historical, I think this is the first piece that I've read on this site that has some type of history behind it. Or at least this is the only one that has stuck out for me. lol

Although this does have the history in it, I think it has a deeper meaning. Christopher Columbus and Marco Polo went on a search... so I think you mean that everyone needs to search, follow their dreams... take that risk because life is too short to sit on the sidelines and pout because of unhappiness.

I enjoyed this a lot, the rhyme scheme was spot on and flowed wonderfully!

Very witty..in a subtle way, as usual Mike!

Everyone seems to be focusing on other lines but..this one held my interest...

    each new calendar travels on

What about the Mayan Calendar....if you believe in that one....your ship's about to sink :)

Wow I love this poem! I really enjoyed it. First, I like the historical aspect of it. I think this story in particular is really something people still think about... It is strange how they came in and took the Native Americans' home in a sense. I also like the comparison to the "theory" that the world will come to an end soon. I really liked your ending.

"For a new creation to be enjoyed
    another world must be destroyed
Though many years have come and gone
    each new calendar travels on"

^^ I really feel like you taught us a valuable lesson here. Sometimes this is true... the world has to come to an end, in order for us to start our next journey... depending on one another's beliefs.

    Great job!

I love this!! I have never read poetry that I would call educational yet this tells a story too. It's a lesson and an art form, different but very enjoyable.
