They Sit Alone

by Maple Tree   Dec 11, 2012

Mental anguish
suffocates my
mind with thoughts
of ending the delusional
idea that we can make
a change.

How can one person
make a difference
when everyone else
becomes selfish,
diving in seas pools
of their own greedy
ideals.

It sickens my heart
to find them scurrying
like rats,
when the people who
count the most,
are waiting for them
to just love them.

They sit alone and wait....

This poem could have been written for all of us, I think it is one of the most relate-able poems I have read in the years I have been on here. 'Delusional idea' is really cutting, so self mocking. Yet you proceed with this thought even though you know deep down it won't affect change.
We then move onto to a message about society, you have stepped back and made a fantastic observation, I have looked for meanings, 'rat-race' comes to mind with the thought that families tend to work and play hard without giving time to their loved ones, I can imagine a Dad who works all hours then goes out boozing while his wife and kids sit at home.
Not sure if this is what you were referring to but the beauty of a good poem is that we can take something away from it.
This is certainly a good poem.

Wow...that opening stanza is really quite sad...My intake on in seemed more like someone who wants to make a difference is slowly giving up hope that people they want to help are just unchangeable.. but we cant lose hope..maybe for 20 minutes, or a day, but not all together...sometimes it takes years of persistance to reach people and sometimes certain people need to hit rock bottom before they acknowledge they need help and are willing to accept it.

never lose hope......but I do want to say I see what youre saying....and it pathetic these people who are so greedy, so selfish...They'll awaken some day if we keep trying to open their eyes to their conceited ways..

    awesome write!

    Mental anguish
    suffocates my
    mind with thoughts
    of ending the delusional
    idea that we can make
    a change.

    - I have had this feeling all to often, that whatever big thing we do will not ever be nig enough to make even a small change in the world, but what I remember is that we may not be able to change the world and its ways, but we are able to change people's lives and make a difference in them just like you do, and that is worth so much more.

    How can one person
    make a difference
    when everyone else
    becomes selfish,
    diving in seas pools
    of their own greedy
    ideals.

    - the people who do make the differences are the people who make the world a better place, and all these good and selfless people make up for all the ones who just don't care or refuse to take part in their responsibility in the world.

    It sickens my heart
    to find them scurrying
    like rats,
    when the people who
    count the most,
    are waiting for them
    to just love them.

    - this part is the heart breaker. do you know what image I got in my mind here? A little child wanting love but their parents are too selfish and busy with their own problems and greed for material things that they have forgotton this child's heart. I see it all too often and is just one of the many situations this poem can be placed upon.

    They sit alone and wait....

    - this ending line stands out so much and is what the reader has left in their mind. all the good people just waiting patiently hoping that one day things will be better, different, hopeful.

I believe that we will all get by and make a difference if we can touch the lives of others, that means more than holding onto making greater changes. And believe me, you touch the lives of others! x

What a bitter truth. So well said. I can relate a lot to it. And also we really do sit alone and wait for that bright sunshine when life is all materialistic
    Powerful piece(:

This is so sad, yet so damn true... people just care about themselves anymore and not about those around them, they put their elderly loved ones in homes so they don't have to be bothered with them and then they hardly, if ever, go visit... this brings tears to my eyes and breaks my heart... powerful words you have written!
