Fortunate Son?

by Larry Chamberlin   Jan 2, 2013

Fortune is god's way of teasing us
giving the illusion of happiness
or the appearance of suffering
when neither is our true state.

What goes our way on Monday
will easily go awry on Wednesday
and disasters on Thursday
may turn to boon by the weekend.

Do not strike out in anger
for losses you incur
nor lord it over others
for a lottery won by chance.

There is a deeper flow to life
than appears on the surface
and ephemeral events like joy
are simply washed away.

By what you should abide
I would not presume to say
but one that seeks true purpose
is closer to the shore.
