A poem for the lonely

by Yakari Gabriel   Jan 3, 2013

Look at you, you beautiful thing.. how do you manage to spend
so much time on your own? how do you get by so many days
without hearing the laughter of a friend, without feeling arms
wrap around your frame. you're so brave aren't you?

staying alone with all your fears, not asking anyone
to help you fight them, how you swallow secrets like
pills and until they start working inside and the
pain eases, you push your dreams into the back
of your chest trying to quiet their loud voices
it bothers you, right? the way you pretend
that its perfectly fine for you to be thrown
in bed for more than a week, growing weak

your social skills, thinning with
the passing of hours, you've forgotten
how to start conversations- the word "hello"
makes you feel awkward, you live inside
your mind, and you don't want people
to see your imagination, you're hiding
something, becoming more and
more mysterious-

and you think its brave,
to not need anyone, to not be anyone
to sit there and stare at the wall and be nothing,
pretending to feel nothing..when
you've got a heart pumping like crazy
infront of your lungs-

you coward, avoiding life
is not bravery
the sun misses
your skin, the wind wants
to hear your voice..

you're here, you're here.
don't let that go to waste.

WOW.. I love this! I can relate to this so much as I suffer with social anxiety and struggle to communicate and leave the house sometimes. This really touched me deep because what you described was the loneliness we feel often but everybody needs someone, no matter how brave we think we can be. Some things you just cant do on your own.

You described the isolation well, shutting yourself off in your room of 4 walls as company, this was really clear and I am sure we have all done it at some point.

I like how you end the poem with a bit of nature, showing us that the world is ours and wants us here, with the sun and wind missing us, that was beautiful. It is like saying we belong here and the world agree's.

Then the final note of encouragement and hope because a life spent inside 4 walls would be a lonely life of regret. I am forever setting myself goals which help me live each day and get over my fears.

Adore this poem, I think you done a great job. I think the category should be life. I think that is what it is about, living life and even when it gets tough we have to carry on.

    Brilliant job !! 5/5 x

Hey- apologize for not leaving a comment when I read this a few days ago but wanted to say this is a contemplative piece for me. I sometimes feel like it's simpler to hide away or deal with pain alone, without talking it through with someone. Your care and quiet love in this poem is heart-warming....and it gets more encouraging. Like The Huntress said there is an abundance of understanding here, you look into this character's soul, and speak through to her. There is something so eye opening & soothing here:

    "you coward, avoiding life
    is not bravery
    the sun misses
    your skin, the wind wants
    to hear your voice..

    you're here, you're here.
don't let that go to waste."

The feeling I have now is security...I really like how you wrote these thoughts tenderly yet with that push to truly live, and keep your spirit up and into the world. Wonderful <3

I like your soft, comforting yet strong tone here. You show understanding but you're also trying to pull the person you're speaking to out of her solitude. I see an Alysia or Warsan in you, your words never fail to touch me, shine on. ;)
