Living on the frontlines

by Beauty In The Breaking   Jan 5, 2013

Holding yourself together
when the world expects you to fall,
the pain unexplainable
but no outward wounds to show for it
as you fall to your knees.

Life is just a constant war
and we're standing on the frontlines
trying to hold it all together,
trying to pretend at peace and calm
as our world is torn apart.

Tired of fighting,
tired of the pain,
tired of wondering
if we'll survive the day
or if this is the final one.

The horror of a reality
that I used to think just existed in stories
where the fear of losing the people you love
is a constant living thing
that you just try not to think about.

A world where you're afraid to part,
afraid to say good night
in case it's the very last time,
where fear is a constant way of life,
welcome to the frontlines.

Tired of fighting,
tired of pain,
tired of wondering
if we'll survive the day
or if this is the final one.

Wondering how much more we can take
before we finally shatter,
knowing I'm reaching my limit
where I just can't take any more,
without something having to change.

Pacing back and forth

praying just to be numb
and for the thoughts to go away
as the tears freely flow,
a testament to the pain inside.

Standing on the frontlines
of a war we didn't start,
just hoping that the phone will ring
and yet fearing that it will,
this is no way to live.
