Relativity

Smeared dreams, like lipstick on the mirrors
of dingy motel bathrooms. Tears like blood
left on dirty pillowcases, the memories of
nightmares, ashes and used-up incense,
blackened matches and broken guitar strings
unravelled. A moth-eaten conscience and a
calloused heart, the stale scent of beer and
gin and diluted failure. Pairs of unworn
shoes and black dresses which kneel,
abandoned in the corner...

As we sing and cry and our eyes are
washed but never clean.

The world is grey today and the sky is angry
as the rain lands on my eyelashes, rippling
down the sidewalk like burned flesh.

Please, don't help me understand.

Just wrap me in your arms and let me lie here,
pressed against your chest so I can hum along
to the beating of your heart and...

remember the truth.
