When is Our Next Leap?

by Skyler   Feb 11, 2013

On wings made stiff by eager hands
We soared through clouds beyond our lands
The phrase still fresh upon our minds:
"One giant leap for man-kind"

Though years have passed, we've not stepped past
The once inspiring flag and mast
The value placed on exploration
Has lost its meaning in our nation

Voices hushed, learning halted
With violence, fear, and death exalted
Refusing the chance to know why we are
We turn our gaze down from the stars

A nation turns aside the sun
To keep their hands on knives and guns
And of these freedoms, which is worse;
To protect the second, or lose the first?

You may have never heard Bob Dylan's "License to Kill" but this poemhelped me to understand the depth of what may have inpired him to write that folk song

I love Bob Dylan. Wasn't inspired by that song specifically, but I usually am moved by the Dylan/Guthrey vibe when I write

I truly love everything about this piece. It's inspiration, truthful, and speaks volumes about our nation.

The rhyme scheme was spot on, it flowed perfectly.

Skyler, you've penned a great piece which becomes one of my favourites of life poems. I love life poems to the maximum extent. I loved the topic, the rhyming and wording as well. The title is inspiring and the poem speaks volumes of itself. This is the first time for me to comment one of yours but it's a good start to read your poems my friend. I loved your style and I'm looking forward to reading more. Thank you very much for sharing this with us.
