What Ever Happened to Jesse Cane? (Narrative)

by Rusheena   Feb 12, 2013

*Written 1/24/13*

I had a friend, named Jesse Arcane, who loved to have a good time.
He'd do almost anything, short of committing a crime.
His electric blue eyes could turn any woman to stone,
but his heart belonged to his past, so he favored being alone.

Jesse had a black '68 Mustang that he loved so dear.
Whenever he was behind the wheel, he had no fear.
He used to do donuts in my daddy's field, when it was dusty and dry.
He'd even let me drive, sometimes, and afterwards, we'd look at the sky.

Jesse never told me how he got so buck wild.
The only think he'd ever tell me was that he'd never been a child.
I would never know the full story of poor Jesse's history,
and he liked it that way, being shrouded in mystery.

The last time I saw Jesse was May 4, 2008.
We were stargazing on my back porch, and it was getting really late.
It was fifteen minutes to midnight, but he didn't care.
He said that he needed to tell me something, something he'd never share.

I'll never forget that look on his face, so helpless yet grim.
Even his twinkling baby blues went two shades dim.
What he whispered in my ear still makes my blood run cold.
It was the most disturbing secret that I've ever been told.

Out of the blue, he said he had to go but was never coming back.
Then he pulled me close and kissed me, before I could react.
Before he spun off in the dust, he said, "Everything will be alright,"
but I got a bad feeling, and I couldn't sleep that night.

The next morning, I got the phone call that would haunt me forever.
Jesse's Mustang was found wrapped around a tree, near Garner River,
but the police never found Jesse, even after years of scavenging.
It's like he disappeared out of thin air, if only there were such a thing...

There are times, when I swear I've see him, watching me from afar,
and every night, I look out my window, hoping to see his black car.
To this day, people ask me, "What ever happened to Jesse Cane?"
I'll never truly know the answer, but it was never mine to claim...

*Inspired by the movie title "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" and Nirvana's cover of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"*

    Really interesting write Rusheena!

I have one small suggestion...in rhyming pieces, the flow is pretty crucial so the reader can have a smooth read...to help with that its easier to make sure your syllable count is almost the same in every line.

I found this poem to be intriguing...and yet, creative since you were inspired by two things to write it. Makes me wonder where his body was? Somewhat creepy..

    well done girl!

Thanks, Chelsey! I had a really hard time with the flow and rhyme in this one, so I pretty much gave up. But I've been getting similar feedback about it, so I guess it's time to fix it.

Listened to "Where did you sleep last night" while reading for full effect. Your other poem I read had a Nirvana feel, too, come to think of it. If you've never read Kurt Cobain's journals, I recommend doing so. It matches some of the tone of your work. The rhyme scheme gets a little weak at a few points, but that is by no means the main focus of this poem. You're such a talented narrator. 5/5

Yeah, I had a lot of trouble concluding this one, so I rambled a bit. Thanks for the constructive criticism, much appreciated. :)

I loved the story so much, it's interesting! The last two stanzas are sorrowful.
    A loveable work.

I truly loved the fifth stanza, very strong imagery here. I fell in and out of rhythm in this poem but I enjoyed the story.

"Even his twinkling baby blues went two shades dim."

Great picture in this sentence, I felt this line, keep it up!
