Ice Crystal Hands

by Baby Rainbow   Feb 13, 2013

My head rests gently upon your chest
as it slowly rises up and down
with every faint breath you take.

Our magnetic fingers are interlocked
in the promises that we kept safe
between the palms of our love.

A whistling wind echoes through my ears
as your wheezing grows louder
and creates a thunderstorm in my heart.

The heat is escaping from your ice crystal hands
as your precious time is running out
and fading from your body.

And with my head still laid upon your chest,
my tear drops soak your pale white skin
and dies it a shade of blue.

The heat is escaping from your ice crystal hands
as the magnets in our fingers fail
and I feel them loosen from my grip.

Silence freezes the hospital room
as you take your final breath.
My heart breaks in two,
becoming number than ice
knowing that this is goodbye.

You nailed this! If voting wasn't hard enough, after I read your poem, I was bummed that we had to choose only one. This is very powerful and evoked so much emotion. It's so tragic but beautiful, and it provided an a very vivid visual. I know this won't be my last time reading this. Nominated!
