Milestones

by Poet on the Piano   Feb 23, 2013

There are days when the highway sure seems
like a safer place than the lingering four walls
of a house that is too small, often mocking why
you choose to wake up.

There are days when running is the only
antidote to rescue you from the lethargy in
your muscles and the nostalgia of a time
before you lost yourself.

There are days when feeling ill takes on
a brand new meaning, for when have you
been able to physically make your stomach
sick before?

There are days when becoming a vaprous
memory would settle all the disquieted chaos,
when you have spent a summer losing trust
in the people who you first befriended.

There are days when you'll place your arms
around your mid-chest not for security but
for knowing you're alive.

But just as the evasive tide can turn,
so can the months, hours, seconds before you.
You may have a backpack ready for the day
when you will become the mile markers on
a stoic road no one takes a pause over...
There will be a day when your veins might have
the urge to cross those five foot barriers
and risk everything to have someone put
their emergency brakes on once for you.

These days will be overturned, they won't
be everlasting. The bridges to pieces of your soul
will someday be within your grasp, and no more will
you feel unsafe.

Those solid yellow lines will not define you
for they are only milestones to conquer.
