Time Machine

by Baby Rainbow   Mar 19, 2013

I step inside the time machine
that takes me back to you.
Picking up every wrong decision,
every rule of yours I broke.
I take back every word I said;
words you told me not to speak.
Gathering all the bravery
I thought I might have had
in order to escape from you.
Filling a bag as deep as the ocean
with all the things you stole from me.
Placing it firmly inside your hands
before dropping to my bleeding knees.

I take it back,
I take it back,
I give it all back to you.

I step outside the time machine
and give myself back to you.

This is heartbreaking. The whole I was reading this, I was like "please don't go back; please don't go back". Growing up witnessing several of women in my family go through this, including my mother, I can definitely identify with this. You want so badly for that person to see their worth and just leave that person, but they never do or don't for a long time.

I really like the theme of the time machine. The speaker is reliving the times she was victimized and when tried to leave, but when she steps back into reality, she's in the same situation. Hope I interpreted this right. Great write.

Wow. This is a strong piece. There is such desperation in the speaker's soul, it's gut-wrenching. And what's fresh about this, is that it seems to be about an abusive relationship when you talk about the broken rules, the things this person has stolen.

"Filling a bag as deep as the ocean
with all the things you stole from me.
Placing it firmly inside your hands
before dropping to my bleeding knees.

    I take it back,
    I take it back,
I give it all back to you."

^This feels like a surrender. And this poem really almost feels like Stockholm syndrome - where the victim falls in love for the abuser as a survival technique.

This is terrific - the root word being terror.
    Wow. Really good one!
