The Ghosts of Devil's Rock (Narrative)

by Rusheena   Mar 20, 2013

There once was a zealous,
motley crew, in search of glory and gold.
From the Caribbean to the Caspian,
they conquered the seas of old.
'Til one dreary night, they sailed through a fog,
as thick as and as black as tar.
Directionless, they drifted east,
away from their precious North Star.

All of a sudden, they heard a shrill cry
that chilled them to the bone.
Frozen in fear, were the buccaneers,
for they knew they were not alone.
"Be gone, Dreadful Spirit!"
yells the mighty captain,
but little did he know
of what next would happen.

Just like that, the fog was gone
but so was the full, silver moon.
Then, a beautiful goddess,
clothed in scales, emerged
from the blue lagoon.
She asked of the crew,
"I beg of you, please return my beloved jewels."
But the crew burst out into laughter,
not knowing that they were the fools.

The goddess's eyes turned bloody red,
and she lifted her triton high.
"Then you shall pay!" said the beautiful beast,
as lightening flashed from the sky.
The ship began to shake violently
from the giant waves that grew.
Then the vessel collided with Devil's Rock,
splitting it in two.

The goddess sang the pirates a lullaby,
sweet and soothing to the ear,
but her emerald eyes did twinkle,
consumed with pleasure and cheer.
The poor crew begged her for mercy,
but they knew that it was too late.
Instead, she watched them drown,
one by one succumbing to fate.

Now, their restless souls
haunt the seven seas,
in search of a new home.
Every night, they scavenge the seas,
searching for ships that roam.
So, sailors, beware of the moonless night,
when the fog is dense and black.
For the ghosts of Devil's Rock
will be waiting for you, ready to attack.

This is brilliant!! I love love love the story it is so unique!

I really like the imagery throughout and the dark tone through out is very powerful. I also like your rhyming in the verses, it is subtle and I don't feel it being forced. It gives the poem a nice flow when reading.

The narration is very clever because it starts from the beginning and takes the reader through to the end scene. The ending being that these souls are roaming free in the ocean and awaiting their next victims on ships to come.

Brilliant idea and love the title! Well done.
