Forever Flightless

by Hannah Lizette   Apr 1, 2013

March 23 - 6:00 PM

"Two years ago, I was a flightless bird;
unhinged with the fear of falling
into the forbidden word,
a cringe worthy syllable -
love.

But when you stepped into my view
on a frigid winter morning,
blushing against bleached surroundings -
I knew you would be the sky
my wings could soar in."

His amber eyes sparkled with happiness,
my heart was finally complete -
sealed with a kiss when pronounced
man and wife.

March 23 - 11:00 PM

My husband
is sleeping soundlessly,
lust fufilled and leftover icing caked
in the corner of his pouted lips.

Tomorrow, we leave for Paris -
la ville de l'amour.

March 24 - 4:00 PM

He left to go to the store,
procrastination at it's finest.

T Minus two hours -
Au revoir!

6:00 PM

"Breaking news from our 6 o'clock news crew,
there has been a fatal car accident involving
an 18-wheeler and a Chevrolet truck this evening.
One victim has been identified -
the other a "John Doe",
no identification has been found on the scene."

Yesterday a wife, today a widow -
forever flightless in a clouded sky.

*club challenge*

note - this is based on a true story. last weekend a man who had just got married that Saturday (March 23) was killed in a car accident that Sunday (March 24). Absolutely breaks my heart, so this poem is dedicated to him and his wife. :(

I really want to pick this apart, but something inside me won't allow me to. It's so beautiful and heart-breaking, yet perfect.

I love how it feels like diary entries, so personal and intimate in a way. But the ending just rips me apart with the tragedy. I admire that you choose to write about this and also the strength you had to portray it.

Sighs- To be honest Hannah I really don't know what to say except, this is beyond gut wrenching and touching.... I think the time frame: Where you highlight the days events... is what gave it a raw and in your face form of how tragic this message is... On a personal note my heart goes out to this women.. I can't begin to understand the pain she is going through... ugh.... You wrote a dazzling and sorrowful piece and tribute to this precious couple... made me cry.
