Effort

by Tess Harvester   Apr 17, 2013

I'm struggle and sweat
Pick me up
Take me with you
Absorb me in your thoughts
Weave me in your arms.

You can't see me
I am a mirage
I don't exist in portraits
But I'm always available
To work in your motion picture.

I may wake you up early,
Keep you up late,
Require you to adjust
Your original opinions
But you'll get plenty of exercise.

If you stick with me
You may have to forgive
Some enemies
You may need to be kind
To monsters.

At some point
You might gasp for air
Like a salmon on a cleaning table
But if you flop enough
You'll land back into the water.

Like a baby deer
Alone in a dark forest
You might feel afraid
But if you keep rambling
The forest will end.

Thirst may dry you up
Hunger may eat your soul
With me you can
Plant seeds
Grow food to nourish it.

I can help you
Build boundaries
Protect your gardens
So you can enjoy
Years of fulfillment.

I don't guarantee
To take you to Mars,
But if we embark
On that expedition
We will find stars.
