Carousel

by Jenni Marie   Apr 19, 2013

Tangled in knots upside down
lips twirling in spirals as illusive lies
make their presence known
twisted memories remain captivating
her into a darkened past, cold rum soothing her
nerves as she scrawls her pain onto others.

Left with a soul consumed in flames which
was once so full of life; yet now cascades towards death
Sullen and crestfallen she keeps on etching her turmoil
vindictively onto those around her, whilst the
brandy causes her to become slurred and
non responsive for only a short while.

Until she's back to her old tricks, her mendacious nature
spinning in circles like her most loved carousel

I never knew that there was a carousal spelled with an 'a' and carousel spelled with an 'e'...In this poem I feel as though you mean carousal with an a because it's defined as a 'drunken spree' which perhaps is what this seems like? But I do like how it can work both ways, because the beginning makes me think of a carousel you see at fairs how you're going around it, 'tangled in knots' 'lips twirling in spirals of illusive lies' ...such wonderful images, really gives that type of a carousel a great affect. I liked also how 'sullen' and 'crestfallen' sounded together, it was kind of an odd sound but definitely alliterative with the 'en'...I thought you did a great job with the challenge, I loved how the words were incorporated, carousal should have definitely been one, if it wasn't? I don't recall, but it is a good one! Perfectly describes your state of mind in this poem, the emotions you're going through and feeling. Lovely work :)
