All things are lawful but not expedient

So Paul wrote his christian bretheren
some two millenia ago
his meaning I'm sure was other
but this I will forego

for my own word proceeding
like a weed settling on shore
left by the tide receding
where in foment were waters before

it speaks to the awful freedom
that is mine as the image of God
and the only thing to believe in
as if a god is what I impart

shall I commit the sin of adam then
who hid himself in shame
when truth be told his only crime
was for his action assigning blame?

but that I might be like christ
whose life was simple and true
and as for his injunction to love
our concurrance is its proof
