Simple Treasures

by Ashley   May 9, 2013

I had a treasure map,
when I was young.
With scented stickers,
scattered about,
marking my bounty.

It was hand drawn,
on the back of a
piece of a
Fruit Loop box.

I slept with it beneath my pillow.

I carried it in
the front pocket
of my purple Jansport
backpack.

My parents would ask,
"What sort of treasures,
must you hide
all around?"

They didn't know,
that wasn't the goal.
Every sticker
was something I found.

A trickling stream,
splitting the back woods.
My gold!
Marked with raspberry.

The Catskills,
when you lay in the brush fields.
My bounty!
Marked with key lime.

A plateau, just above,
a field full of deer.
My treasure!
Marked with grape.

I was on no quest,
to find a gold chest.
My young heart,
just wanted a view.
