Just because I live beneath an overpass;
doesn't mean I exist in its shadow,
doesn't mean I draw breath from its miasma,
and doesn't mean I seek no ray of sunlight.
Just because I live in the city streets;
doesn't mean I grew talons of felony,
doesn't mean I fostered the spines of the highway,
and doesn't mean I kindle no lantern in a perilous night.
Just because I live beside a ditch;
doesn't mean I clog as wastes slay a flowing water,
doesn't mean I poison as trashes lay waste the watercourse,
and doesn't mean I see nothing beyond its blight.
Just because I live anywhere,
do you think my head bows under your proud feet?
Do you think my feet wander with no course?
Do you think my life remains stagnant like a ditch-water?
I also live, just as you do.
*This poem talks about poverty in my country, specifically the most common places where you can see poor people.
*I have made this poem as an assignment from our English professor. She has given us the challenge to write a poem about any topic, as you can see, with "Just because ... doesn't mean ..." format. Fortunately, this was chosen as the best among my classmates. Just wanna share this with you. :)
