In his bed

by TheDarkCloudBehindthePoet   Jun 5, 2013

He just never seemed to grasp reality,
staring up at the ceiling in his empty king-sized bed with burgundy pillows and sheets to match that was given to him by his parents when they moved to Europe last winter,
for as long as he could remember, gifts and money were brought to him, never having to lift a finger,
seeing all the fake smiles and receiving lifeless embraces from people calling themselves family friends,

It was time for him to fend for his self,
but he never wanted to leave the comfort of his bed, where he felt the safest since he was a child,
building forts and reading scary stories at night with his Mickey Mouse flashlight when he was suppose to be sleeping,
now he had to rise up and hunt for his own food,

Sitting at the edge of his bed, glossing over all the posters he collected since he was a toddler,
from old Michael Jordan slam dunks to retired football players, and don't forget his favorite Dragon Ball Z posters he bought from China Town years back,
he begins to see the world now in a different light,
no one can provide for him like before, because he is on his own.

I love this! I love the conversational tone. It makes the story even more relateable, and it goes really well with the imagery. It can be scary to get out there in the real world, when you've been sheltered all your life. It sounds like the he made a world of his own, since he had never ventured out, but when the time came to grow up, he did just that. You'd think he'd be terrified, leaving all that behind and stepping into an entirely different world, but he embraced it, instead, and became his own man. This is very inspirational, and I hope more people read this. Great write, Chris :)
