Promises

by Daylight Lucidity   Jun 8, 2013

We make and we break them
With hopes people will do the same
And take to heart
Their underlying treasure.

We speak two small words,
"I promise."
And immediate trust pours
From our souls.

Running from the tightness of society's hold,
Breathing and cherishing the air of tedious truces
With that solitary promise
As if it were 14 karat gold.

Be careful of what you say,
It can make or break you
Binding you to someone
And is hard to undo.

Such a simple but hard to follow message you've penned here. I like the way you state how promises are made sometimes very quickly, almost limitless. I think to someone who's young and also hoping for the best in people, trust can as you wrote, pour from our souls...I believe with promises broken and certain ties that may become severed over the years, trust can take on a more guarded meaning. Great last stanza, words are definitely more than just something to throw out, it's a good reminder to never take for granted what words can do and also approach things with care.

    Keep writing :]
