Where I'm From

by The Ninja   Jun 18, 2013

I am from darkness
From creatures crawling in the shadows
Waking with a scream
"It's not real,
Just a bad dream."

I am from different
From the lonely swing
At the edge of the playground
Shunned for who I am
And for being myself

I am from post-it notes
From too many insults
And "I hate you" to
"We aren't friends anymore"
Crying useless tears

I am from notebooks
From countless hours
Spent writing stories
Giving them happy endings
Wishing for one of my own

I am from the maple tree
From pressing leaves
Climbing up way too high
But never falling
Wishing that I could.

This was an interesting poem- the simple repetition of "I am from" was effective and I felt your truths in this poem, you expressed them well, about how unique you are and how others mock you for being different.

The post-it note stanza hit me; I could easily picture the tiny notes building up from people making comments, calling you names, not realizing they can hurt. And it doesn't do anyone good.

I loved the maple tree reference in the end...that gave kind of a nature atmosphere yet feeling like you're always climbing in life, moving higher into reality, and not necessarily wanting to do that. Just wanting to take a step back once in a while.

    Neat write, keep it up!
