Hostility

by Jenni Marie   Jul 27, 2013

He sees the way their eyes
flick towards him, before quickly
averting their gaze. Mouth
tightening as he sees flashes
of hostility in their expression

and he feels like raising his arms
to the heavens and screaming in
hoarse anger, what happened to
innocent until proven guilty.

{Click, snap, flash.}

More news crews invading his
personal space and he wants to
laugh at the absurdity of it all,
for the press has become his
biggest rival and yet

they are the only ones who
are quick to approach him,
the only vultures who do not
avert their gaze and treat him
with deafening silence.

Microphones thrust into his face
and constant endless questioning,
knowing it will be decades before
this little town forgets

he was found innocent at trial.

*Baby Rainbow's Challenge

Prompts:

approach with caution
presumed guilty
after the silence
arch nemesis
the long journey back

This was a pretty well written interesting poem that really makes you think about how easily people get blamed for things when it isn't even certain if they are guilty. People might be innocent but yet they get the blame just because people need someone to put the blame on, and whilst it is correct to say that the innocence of the person might be proven afterwards, they still will have had to go through some not so pleasant experiences in the process, and this poem nicely describes it. Well done.

Man Jenni, this was one heck of a story you told. Made me think how easily the media can twist truth as well as how much they sensationalize what really goes on.... all so things can be "politically correct" or no one thinks they are being haters. Was this written about a specific trial? It immediately made me think of the Zimmerman case and the huge and (in my opinion) unneeded coverage of it. It does seem insane and I love how you kept the tone as a narrator neutral, yet telling the man's side of it made me see how genuine he is..... almost like the media saw what they wanted whether or not he actually did it, and therefore it reflects an image of him to us.

Thoughtful piece, love how deep you went with the prompts and the "innocent until proven guilty" concept!
