God's Great Dust Storm

by TheDarkCloudBehindthePoet   Aug 7, 2013

Dedicate this poem to a creature that I killed about a month back. I just remember the face he made as soon as I ran him over. He looked at me from afar as if he was already crossing the River of Styx. You want to know what he said? He said thank you brother. We men are wretched things. Not caring if we kill a street rat or a possum. Who cares right? It's a disgusting and ugly animal. I beg to differ. It hurt me in a way that I haven't felt before. The guilt of living with blood on my hands. This is my poem dedicated to him.

I remember like it was yesterday,
Driving late at night from work, listening to my new favorite band Katzenjammer's only religious song on their latest album,
The windows down, looking up at my lunar mother as I turned down my block,
From afar I saw the shadowy image of one of God's nocturnal creatures, crossing the street without a care in the world,

Continuing my drive home, I pass by neighbors sitting on the trunk of someone's car, smoking cigarettes and staring into my car as if to see if I'm someone they knew,
I've reached a euphoria only few have reached,
having a near-life experience like Tyler Durden from "Fight Club", until death crossed my path,
God's nocturnal creature, draped in white and black, stopped at the curb and turned around,

For just a moment he turned his head and gazed into my eyes as I drove towards him, reflecting the Grim Reapers image with his eyes, shined from my headlights,
No fear no distractions, he chose me for a reason,
That reason was for me to send him to the afterlife,
Escaping God's great dust storm,

No more hunting for food in the depths of night like his mother did before him,
Or hiding from predators that hunt him every night,
All that soon to be taken away by my unexpected hand,
THUMP!,

Katzenjammer hit their highest note when I banished him from this world,
Magnifying the pain I felt,
A hand on my mouth, tears in my eyes, my tongue removed, and the Angel of Death in my passenger seat, I am in disbelief,
Why did this have to happen?

Tears won't bring him back, nor prayers,
Just the hope that he is in a better place,
playing with his relatives, rough-housing like he use to do back when he was a baby,
I just wrote this poem to tell you I am sorry and I hope you found peace.

First of all, this is one of the most unique themes to a poem I have ever seen. I seriously have to applaud you. You took a simple scenerio and painted it over with extreme visual and emotional plays. It's like I was riding in the backseat watching the entire thing unfold before my eyes. I ate up every bit of the descriptiveness you've used here.

"For just a moment he turned his head and gazed into my eyes as I drove towards him, reflecting the Grim Reapers image with his eyes, shined from my headlights,
No fear no distractions, he chose me for a reason,
That reason was for me to send him to the afterlife,
    Escaping God's great dust storm,

No more hunting for food in the depths of night like his mother did before him,
Or hiding from predators that hunt him every night,
All that soon to be taken away by my unexpected hand,
    THUMP!,"

I read between the lines here that you get the feeling that we've been "chosen" by Fate herself to do some dirty work. "The guilt of living with blood on my hands" as you so put it at the beginning. These speaks volumes about you as a writer, a human being, about your soul. I wish there were more people like you here, as Serena put it, "in this strange world". Ironically, it's others who view the artistic as strange.

Favorited this poem, I fell in love with every aspect of it. The message was much deeper and raw than those I've seen here in a while. Many thanks for sharing. 5/5

:) thank you Serena! Not everyone views life like we do. Most people just think that if you aren't human or a pet then other animal lives don't matter. That is false. We are all Gods creatures. No life out weighs the other, and this experience hurt my soul. Thank you for the love.

Jane your words made me blush and filled my heart with joy. I'm so happy I was able to take you along for the ride and have you feel what I felt and see what I saw. We are few in the sense of caring for every living thing. Thank you for the love :)

Thank you!! :) a life is a life to me no matter if its an insect or animal. We all have family, grew up and fought to survive and I felt like I took it away from him. Thank u for the love!

When I first learned to drive I ran over a chipmunk...and since that day a few more too. I hate that when it happens!

I love that you wrote about this creature, (raccoon, possum whatever it was) most people wouldn't think twice about running over them but since you wrote of it, it gives us a peek into your heart.
