Oh the metaphors in here come across so strongly. The love in this poem is so deep and it is really quite touching.

I imagine a situation where you as a grandparent, or even a parent or family member is watching a little child go through something unpleasant. I assume they are getting a blood test, perhaps they have been unwell so I am picturing this scene in a hospital and I can feel the pain of not being able to take their pain away, but also the comfort they would feel that you are giving them.
