Reflections at the End of Life

by Larry Chamberlin   Aug 13, 2013

Revisiting the past I recall the words
I spoke to you as a younger man:
"Believe in me," I said, bolstered
by young love, "I'll give you more than
a single life, symbolized
by this pearl necklace of love."

"Together we will discover dreams
in which stars are blue and
moonlight gives the world colorless
color that somehow honors our reflections.

"Devotion and protection I will give you:
when you are stalked by beasts
I will be your dragon slayer;
if you fall into quicksand
I will pull you to safety.

"If ever a third guy enters our life
it will be the stranger's tears that flow
in unrequited ardor frustrated
but never yours, my love.

"In the end, aged and diseased
as we lay together awaiting
closure in final sleep eternal,
grandchildren's little voices
will give comfort knowing we've
created our own tree of life."
