You Think You Know (Couplet)

by -Choke-On-MY-Halo-   Oct 4, 2013

That life is complicated
But your both right and wrong,

I'll never lay in my partner's arms or hold my daughter close
Because I decided to dedicate my life to God,

People walk around clueless
Yet others live in total darkness,

Some humans decide that life is useless
Throwing it away&others mourn for those fools,

One percent decide to become closer to God
Giving up everything for an entire life of Holy love,

Fifty percent say they dedicate their lives for the Holy One,
But in the end lie about it all,

Ten percent actually say the truth
&I pray for them still,

Forty-nine percent don't know where they stand
Little do they know where they'll go after they're dead,

Angels guard every last one of us
&God loves us but not all love Him back,

To this day I'm still sorry
But I bet you don't,

You think you know
But I know I don't

Well first, I like how the title was part of the poem - quite ingenius! I liked that you wrote a couplet - not many people write in couplets now, I've always found it 'limiting' and prefer free-verse a great deal more, but I'm always astonished by what poets end up writing in varous forms, I always get caught up in the rules of the form and end up writing something that has no essensce to it, but you wrote a magnificent poem, a great homage to God!

    "
Fifty percent say they dedicate their lives for the Holy One,
But in the end lie about it all,"

I was quite intrigued by this poem - in all honestly, I think I'd be in that criteria, but not by purpose. There's numerous people out there that believe in God, but their actions and words conflict that - they're out poisoning the liver and having casual sex every night of the weak, and just the complete antithesis of what the effects of religion should have on a person, but still go church/temple/mosques/et cetera to pray. I'm in no position to judge, but I've always been intrigued by that, I've always assumed that people who have a belief in God, will let that shine through with every action or words they speak, and embrace the words of their respective religion but often times they don't. There's plenty of reasons why, but I found it interesting, and not many people address that fact.

So kudos to you to tackling that thought - it's quite brave of you!
