Locker combinations

by Poet on the Piano   Nov 9, 2013

We practically knew each other's locker
combinations. On the first day of freshmen
year, we became each other's buddy.
S and S, side by side, two soft spoken
blue creatures that did not have
prior seaside friends.

Yet it seemed status really had a voice
in those halls...

Don't think words are the only tornadoes
this town has coming,
for I'm too observant to forget how your
eyes glazed over me.
High school lunch tables used to be for
long-winded talks about everything except
school, everything that made us laugh.
It didn't matter you were more artsy than I,
or that I talked about going to the chapel,
why would that ever matter in telling
if a friendship could be grand?
I didn't judge, but junior year shifted
and senior year caused me to fall a step
behind you, and not want to catch up.

^ I like what you did here, the S and S then the side by side.

There are friends with whom we can just talk and talk and never stop. The topic is unimportant, it can just go on and on, it can be nonsensical yet make perfect sense.. Though it's sad when at some point the communication stops. Specially, if it was because someone got better at doing something or because that someone moved to other place and no longer knows what to talk about, perhaps fear that the other one may not understand what he/she is talking about? hmm I think I'm deviating from the poem.

    But it's good.

I also liked what you did with "don't think words are the only tornadoes this town has coming" it has this punchy tone.
