Raindrops

by Forever Hers   Nov 29, 2013

Heat floods off the grey sidewalk,
Distorted lines rising higher and higher
As her hand slips into mine
And our fingers intertwine.
She pulls me closer to her side
And whispers sweet words in my ear
All the while my heart beats frantically
As my smile becomes permanently fixed
On my lips.
I bring her to a special place,
One I've had the pleasure of exploring
And pull her to the hidden river's edge
Turning her towards me.
I kiss her hands softly
And let my eyes roam over her soft skin,
Slowly reaching the eyes that capture me
With one small glance; bright as the sun.
With a deep breath I begin to speak,
My mouth trying to form around words
That I've practiced in a mirror for weeks
Yet are stuck in my throat as I stare at my world.
With a distant rumble from the clouds,
We glance upward at the now blackening sky,
The sun and blue off in the far distance,
And running from the approaching storm.
Raindrops begin to fall and softly land on our bare skin,
Cooling us of summer's oppressive heat
And it is then that I gain courage
And turn her eyes back to me.
With one more deep breath
And the encouragement of the babbling stream,
I land gently on one knee, ring in hand,
And ask her to marry me.
