Set In Stone

by Hannah Lizette   Dec 14, 2013

You've traced the lines
of my hands like you
initialed wet concrete,

delicate fingers signing
a contract that cannot
(and will not) be stored
away and forgotten
in a clasped envelope.

Nobody has ever said
my name the way you do,
it's like a gasp married
a whisper -

like your lungs can just
muster enough breath
to translate the love
traveling from your
heart to lips that
only part for me.

One line jarred a bit for me:

    Nobody has ever said
my name the way you do,
    it's like a gasp married
    a whisper -

'It's like a gasp married /a whisper' doesn't seem to flow as well as the rest of the piece. You might try reworking it-- 'the marriage of a gasp / and whisper' or something.

I love the image of initials being traced in wet cement compared with being a contract that can't be tucked back in a drawer.

This one made me think a bit but I love the meaning :). Or what I think. You are so in love with this person that you live in your own little world. And everything they do makes you happier each time. I loved the imagery of the hands you explain. That was great to read and so very unique. I think the third stanza is my favorite though. As I said everything they do is love and even saying your name makes your heart flutter. I loved how you wrapped this poem up too. To me you said that only you can be in their heart. This is a great poem as it shows love is real in your life. Well done.
