Prison Stand

by Larry Chamberlin   Jan 28, 2014

Laid up in bed on this sunny day
remembering the spirit of play;
outside my window children cry
for their chance to make a try,
not me - I have this leg of clay.

Transform my elemental parts!
let me swoon the ladies' hearts;
I would run back every ball then leap
across that line while defenders weep:
with two good legs - the cheering starts.

But here I lay, hearing others take
acclaim that never mine mistake;
oh, cut this foul limb off of me,
replace it with metal or even tree.
Let me out for heaven's sake!

If I can't run free then end it all -
sever this silver chord - I'll fall,
but such a short trip in the round
already halfway to the ground.
Give me freedom or a burial shawl.

    Larry,

    What a beautifully written piece with plenty play on words and imagery to see us through. The rhyming was tremendous and kept the flow upbeat throughout.
    The loss of a limb being the base of the piece which gave it a more serious prospect.

    This poem is a metaphoric rhyme scheme of brilliance!!!!
    What a wonderful poem by Larry!
    The loss of a limb is symbolic or perhaps is the base line of the poem, but either way I took several deeper angles with this poem.

    I truly enjoy poems where I can rock and sway as I read, just like a song, and with this poem I was left speechless. The word usage and play on words, angled with a rhyme flow was the perfect touch for this incredible poem!!
