Yesteryear (Villanelle)

by Michael D Nalley   Jan 29, 2014

Looking back at the photographs of yesteryear
Ghosts of the past seem to gaze silently at me
Images of forms that may be no longer here

In sorrowful eyes washed clean by ancient tears
I imagine what that spirit can feel and see
Looking back at the photographs of yesteryear

As each of the future generations draw near
Reflections are captured in genetic history
Images of forms that may be no longer here

Their traits are copied by mother nature so clear
That it seems that each has a sacred destiny
Looking back at the photographs of yesteryear

Then sorrow turns to joy as sadness to good cheer
As each faithful ray of hope comes from clarity
Images of forms that may be no longer here

Reborn in the things that previous ages held dear
We then take our first breath and each step with no fear
Looking back at the photographs of yesteryear
Images of forms that may be no longer here
