Green

by Maple Tree   Feb 26, 2014

Spirited, vibrant rainbow
was the soul that bathed
in my iris's, sparkling misty
waters flowed deep within.

Dancing in pastel colors
for years upon years,
very confident of the
love I gifted to him.

Thunderous clouds
bore witness to a weeping
ache, the day I gazed
upon a broken hearted
green.

I was introduced
to the monster that came
between me and my love,
it was then that I understood
the meaning of sorrow.

Our fences have since been
repaired, a love far stronger
than I could have dreamed of,
but the shadow of lamentation
underneath our thin layered skin,
allows me to feel nothing but
darkness.

That memory needs to be buried
in a blanket of soft green grass,
so that I may enjoy the clear blue
sky once
again....

without crying.

To the person who down voted this...why? (That's me being nice BTW, a$shole!)

I want to say so much about this but...words elude me. Suffice to say..I figure I know who the monster is your refer to here and, like most monsters..it's invisible but, unfortunately this one cannot be fobbed off as a dream...You have shown, yet again, a vulnerability in your daily life that is very appealing because most of us can relate in one way or another...

Oh Maple, this is one of those poems which you write now again, where you do not hide behind your words too much, you don't use metaphors and scenes of nature to bury your emotions, but instead you use them to express and admit them. Pure emotion and truth, and although I hate that this emotion is inside you, you do write it so well when you let it come out as what it is.

As for the poem, To open with a rainbow is so contrasting to ending the poem with the black darkness that you feel inside, which shows just how much the emotion has changed.

It describes the journey of love, the ups and downs, and how in one second, it can all change and become a different world.

I think your choice of " thin layered skin" was such an excellent description here, it shows how fragile we become when something is surfacing below our skin, and we have no control over it. It shows how vulnerable we then become to it.

The loss in this poem is so powerful, loss of that colour in that rainbow, the happiness, the future. I feel the strong desperation that is between the lines, where you try and convince yourself that tomorrow will be brighter, but sometimes you find yourself mourning at the truth which you know is there.

I also like how you described the love as becoming stronger, despite the monster. And I believe this to be so true, I think the more we go through, the more we appreciate and love one another.

The colour green is quite interesting here for this poem, because innocently it is the colour of someone's eyes. But deeper again is the peace and calm of nature that you seek. But on a deeper again level, green represents jealousy. And in this case, the jealousy can be related to your situation and how it feels unfair that it happens to you, and not others. It can be overwhelming when we see bad things happen to such good people. So I thought green was a perfect colour choice here, to represent each angle that this poem can take.

The hidden thing for me in the poem, is the bravery. The bravery of facing each day with a smile, and trying to enjoy it, but knowing that your heart won't truly let you enjoy it, hence why the poem ends with the tears.

Finally, the poem seems to describe 2 different battles, in one way. The first battle being the monster, which is inside the other person. Then the second, which is an emotional battle inside the author. And as sad as this is, the comforting part of the poem is the tone of love, and how they have each other to go through this together.

This write really touched me Maple, and I openly admit I do not feel connected to a lot of poems, in such a deep way, when the tears come. But yes, you got me with this one.

    Thank you for sharing this.
    Sending hugs.
    xx
