To My Unborn Child

by DarkLight   Feb 28, 2014

To my unborn child,

Firstly,
I love you.
I will always love you.
At present,
you are only a long-off thought,
like a memory I want to have but must live through it first.
One of four possible names.
But I am confident you will join us someday soon.
Not tomorrow or next week.
But soon.
At least I hope so.
I dream of knowing you,
of learning more about you.
What type of person will you be?
Will you be a writer or a thinker?
Will you be an athlete or stock broker?
A film maker like mummy and daddy,
Or will you be addicted to writing like I am,
Whoever you are,
whoever you become,
I promise to always love you.
I can't promise to be perfect,
but can promise to be me and do my best.
We will likely have our disagreements over the years. More as you grow up and yearn to see and learn more of the wide world.
Push boundaries, my child.
Too often, we cower in corners and hand over control of our lives to fear.
You will feel fear.
It's natural.
But do not give in to it.
Close your eyes if you must,
ask for help if you need it.
But keep going.
Don't give up.
Remember,
I will always love you.
Even when those days arrive where your mother and I are no longer here.
I know it may seem morbid to discuss death when you not yet born but I wish to have no taboos with you.
Death is a part of life.
Though parents would give much to shield their children from such seemingly scary topics,
I want you to know of them.
Ultimately, you will be stronger for it.
On the journey, do not cease learning.
Experience, touch, taste, smell, listen, and see.
Do not settle for anything less than what brings you fulfillment and utter joy.
Remember you are human and you can do anything.
I know I will meet you someday.
I do not know when.
It won't be tomorrow or next week.
But it will be someday.
I can't wait to meet you.
I love you.
Dad
