Coffee beans.

by Poet on the Piano   May 18, 2014

You threw them in my face.
They scattered like skittles,
trying to win the 100-meter
dash to my nostril.

You were trying to rid me
of all fragrances...
but that is an impossible feat.

For when I ride out in
lonely sighs,
when I exit at 3:15 AM,
when I close the dreamy doors
behind me,
I enter reality
without flinching.

Because I have become immune,
to scents that take me to Oahu
and London and France and Morocco;
I know those idealistic places
won't make me any better,
won't make me any more
successful or loved.

So don't say I smell too strongly,
don't you dare whisper that I
feel too much,
for these fragrances have soaked
into my skin,

yet I don't let them overpower
my exclusive aroma.
