In Midnight Rome

by Ashraf Al Deen   Jun 2, 2014

Keeping Santa Maria Mizzore at my back
I was walking straight and then took right;
In a moment I was in the ruins of Nero's house,
Strolling alone and Nero came alive in my shadow;
Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus.

Though it was sometime past midnight and in dark,
I know the shadow never leaves one alone.
I wasn't interested in the details of Nero's pomposity,
How many rooms he had in the palace and facilities
Or how many more women he yet needed, because I knew
He had enough of everything whatever in life.

As I left Nero's house proceeded across the garden
The Colosseum, whatever is left, was in front of my eyes;
For a colossal statue of Nero, this huge amphitheater
Of a million people was given such name.
Other than the dramas or animal hunt for entertainment
Male prisoners of political 'n religious discrimination
Would fight Nero's lions. That too for entertainment!

Why Nero, why did you do that? What art was that?
Nero paused and very thoughtfully replied:
I just wanted to live in the history of the world
And you see, I'm still alive through centuries
But, only thing disturbs me yet is that:
I'm devoid of love from people of all times!
