Yellow Brick Road

by Jack Nightengale   Jun 4, 2014

A distant land in a far away place,
From reality to imagination kicking you in the face.

A dreadful disaster, high waters and wind,
No more rainbows around the river bend.

Shrouded in darkness as the witches grin,
One giant mole and glowing green skin.

A vicious cycle of magic in this land,
Yet no power lies in the hand.

Down a path paved in gold,
Just past the munchkins on the yellow brick road.

Straight to the city of emeralds and other treasures,
A city that satisfies your greatest pleasures.

The witches must die to gain your riches,
But only one of them can't grant your wishes.

The path be long as you ask yourself why,
Running into lions, tigers and bears, oh my!

A tin man with no heart,
A cowardly lion at the start,

Who can forget about the scarecrow with no brain,
A worthless team which brings more pain.

A dash of water and this will all be done,
Magic like bullets from a gun.

Should've been warned, have your fortune told,
Or your the next victim, scattered on the yellow brick road.

This one was very odd -- nay, surreal! And that's a great thing! It feels like I'm reading the nightmares I had as a child that children's stories perverted by a twisted childhood gave -- but not in the uncomfortable way either. I really can't put into words how I feel about this poem, but I like it a lot, truly.
