Dove.

by Poet on the Piano   Jun 15, 2014

Hands tied behind my back,
the Devil is too loud, playing
war anthems inside my eardrum-
his voices resurrect
when my mind is idle
and my body wants to come out
from the fool's cave.
But I mustn't, not now,
not until I learn to swim
without emotions drowning me
in sorrow.
I must follow the dove,
my fingers silhouettes against
an oppressed sky, chained until
a promise is born,
until God paints a rainbow
and the olive branches awaken.

I've had this idea for awhile but finally found the words. This is based on the phrase that an "idle mind is the devil's playground".

Maryanne this poem is so beautiful. I loved the contrast in the whole poem between what seemingly is light and dark with light coming out on top. Though I am not religious at all your words really touched me. I am not sure why. The way you worded this it seems like you are saying that the devil does try to promise you everything but since you have God on your side nothing can harm you. The dove is a symbol of hope and peace. That is the step into the light. Nominated!

I certainly agree that sometimes too much time to think causes our demons to come out and play with us.
I love how you used the dove in this piece, really powerful and I like the glimmer of hope, you know change is coming and you know that there are better things in the future.

Keep writing and keep holding on,
