Be the Poem

by Hannah Lizette   Jun 23, 2014

If you cannot spiral your words
into a rose or write I love you
without the letters it holds,

be the inspiration of a lover
that carries a sunset within her
laughter or be the lingering sigh
after a kiss that explores the future.

If you cannot describe the familiar
touch of a her hand after a long
journey home or scribble the promise
of love onto a post-it note on her
bathroom mirror before her eyes
awaken to see you go,

be the bookshelf for her heart on the
days when she can't bear the weight
or be the sunrise after a long night
of counting stars without you by her side.

If you cannot be the poet that
stitches metaphors onto paper,
be the poem that inspires her to
write about the way your love is
the only thing that keeps her going.

*Inspired by a quote by David Carradine -
"If you cannot be a poet, be the poem."

Ok I am just emotional, this one too got to me....I love anything relating to love. When love is strong it is so beautiful to me. When someone IS the poem, I find that so incredible because when poets unveil their feelings about someone it actually shows their happiness and joy through words and I love that because we are meant to be happy in this life...and its a beautiful thing when someone can bring that out of you.

Hannah you are still by far one of my favorite poets, you connect with me as the reader so deeply, I relate so much, I feel as though I'm often the one who wrote it when I read your work because Im so in sync with them...always love your writing! I'll be reading more!

This is one of the best poems I've ever read, this calls out to every poet hopeless romantic.... Anyone who has a heart, it's one of them pieces and ideas that you wish as a writer thought of, this is by far my new favorite of yours, I can't explain how this made the feel but as soon as I read the first stanza I was falling in love with this piece.

    Perfect piece of writing

    Your talent has no end.

I really love this piece. There has pretty much been everything else already said about it, but it is wonderful.

Wow Hannah - I so miss reading your work and kick myself every time I come back on here and catch up with it!

I adore the opening of this poem, it is one of those catching poems that really draws you in straight away, it feels almost hypnotic in the way you write.

That romantic tone is very positive and uplifting and the imagery of that kiss, I can hear the sigh you mention, and can imagine what emotions would be flying around here.

I feel the poem is so romantic in a non cheesy way - not soppy, but just heart felt, like there is not much need for money nor expensive gestures, but more so in the way that you can just offer love, in all the small ways, and let your partner know they are appreciated.

Love the idea of the quote as your inspiration. very well put together. xx

This is a beautiful poem Hannah,

My only concern is that I believe everyone can be a poet. And that is better to be the poet than the poem because a poem is often abandon.

Plus a poem is written by the poet, a poem has no feelings of their own ( but of the narrator per se, not exactly the writer per se) what seems to me that you described beautifully was more of.. be the muse.

I guess I agree to disagree. In a way, I see what you mean which is pretty. Be unconditional to your lover, show the love through actions. Poets can show...

I have to give this one more thought.

Yes, be the muse is the idea I was going for. That in case a person can't exactly explain themselves poetically like they want to, they should be able to radiate their love in a way that it inspires their lover to be the poet instead.

I was also thinking in a way that it takes two to build a relationship... so one could be the poet, the other the poem... the poem compliments the poet and vice versa. Without one, there would be nothing. Does that even make sense? lol It does in my head but I'm not sure if I am explaining it good enough.
