Run home, our once Captain

by Skyler   Jul 4, 2014

My Captain, I will follow you
Wherever you will lead
And ev'rything you say is true
Your ev'ry word I'll heed

Great Captain, whom I fight beside
Against the swelling seas
My solid rock and wizened guide
Can you not hear my pleas?

The sea is calm, but there are men
With beads trained on our crowns
My Captain, please, just tell me when
And I will shoot them down

Great Captain, noble Captain
What lies inside your head
That when the worst would happen
You could leave your men for dead?

When you were my Captain
I loved you, revered you

And you were our Captain
And awestruck, we feared you

Our only true Captain
But your confidence paled

Our noble great Captain
You've left us to sail

Into uncharted waters
Towards uncertain shores
And you've left us for slaughter
On the tides of your war

Run home, our once Captain
To those that you cherish

And hope you raised a Captain
That would much rather perish

Than abandon the men
Who lived by his deed
Who'd charge into the din
And honor his creed

My Captain, did I not follow you
Wherever you would lead?
Yet in your stead I pulled us through
In your place, I bleed.

This is such a fantastic poem, I can't believe no one has commented this.

First, I love the rhyming scheme to it, it is not full on, just subtle and I think for me it really works for the flow of the poem. Your tone is kept the same throughout, aiming that message of abandonment at this captain, whom you followed solidly.

the wording is really great and I like your language choice of using some of the slang terms, and abbreviated wording just as it would be spoken. this isn't often done, but in this case it works.

I really enjoyed this, thought it was quite a touching poem and realistic to today's services and those who serve.

    Well done
